This website is ceasing operations

It is with great regret that I inform our thousands of users that this service will be shutting down effective the fall of 2019.

Regretably, the web site has never really been able to attract sufficient advertising support for it to achieve what I feel was its greatest potential; a national service, free to progressive consumers, guiding shoppers to unionized goods and services in the most responsive and quick and convenient manner possible.

Our plans included regionalizing the service to make the service relevant to users from coast to coast to coast; a bilingual service for our French-speaking users; a free service for unions in every part of Canada which allowed them to reach a broad base of consumers with the Shop Union message; and by far the best union-finding web site in the world, bar none.

Those plans all relied on our ability to gain the confidence of the leadership of this country’s union movement. We needed them to support the web site with very modest advertising dollars and to collaborate in providing us with their information about what products and services their members provided.

We failed in that respect. Our concept was absolutely bullet-proof.  A web site accessible on your iPad or on your smartphone as you walked down the mall; a blazingly quick data base which provided its information in seconds to guide your shopping; a Google-like key word search; Free of charge to consumers; and available to anyone on the web.

We failed because we could not convince leading union leadership and enough unions to sign on as supporters and advertisers. The Canadian Labour Congress had no interest in helping promote the site. We got a similar reaction from both the Ontario and BC federations of labour. I was also disappointed that Canada’s two largest unions, Unifor and CUPE, declined to participate.

The outstanding leadership came from both the BC Building Trades and the Ontario Building Trades, who both offered strong ongoing support.

Here are the unions and other organizations who supported to the end.

  • BC Building Trades Council
  • BC Teachers Federation
  • Community Savings Credit Union
  • Elevator Constructors Local 82
  • IBEW local 213
  • Insulators Local 118
  • International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115
  • Koskie Glavin Gordon, lawyers
  • Mail-O-Matic Services
  • Millwrights Union
  • Mohr Good Ideas
  • MoveUp (COPE Local 378)
  • NOW Communications
  • Ontario Building Trades Council
  • Teamsters Local 213
  • Teamsters Local 31
  • Unite HERE Local 40
  • United Steel Workers Union, District 3

These are the heroes of and we are indebted to them for their loyalty and support.
